La Paz

La Paz, originally named “Nuestra Señora de la Paz” (Our Lady of Peace), is the highest capital in the world. Boasting absolutely breathtaking views, and renowned for its unique markets, very unusual topography, and traditional culture, in La Paz, modern day living melds with ancient tradition and culture.

A visit to the Mercado de las Brujas (The Witches' Market), is one of the more fascinating sights in La Paz. Here you’ll find mystical potions, lotions, and herbs, dried frogs, folk remedies, and an intriguing display of ingredients used to manipulate the spirits that populate the Aymara world. One of the more prominent and macabre products on sale are dried llama fetuses, always buried in the foundations of new buildings as an offering and to bring blessings from Pachamama - Mother Earth. Often circulating through the market are yatiri or witch doctors, identifiable by their dark hats and coca pouches, offering fortune-telling services to locals.

La Paz also has many natural attractions: desert, high snow-capped mountains, the incredible Andean landscape, and sub-tropical regions. Also certainly worth a visit are the archaeological complexes, such as the recently excavated Tiahuanaco. New discoveries are being made here almost daily. The Valley of the Moon, with its eroded stone formations, also makes for a very interesting hike.
