La Paz (originally named “Nuestra Señora de La Paz” or “Our Lady of The Peace”) is the highest capital in the world and is located in the center of a large canyon that lies at the foot of the snowy Illimani Mountains. There are dried llama fetuses, which are meant to protect from evil. Something interesting about this city is that it is very fire-resistant: because of its high altitude it is difficult for a small flame to sustain itself.
La Paz has an enormous variety of natural attractions, such as: high snowy mountains, the Andean landscape, desert areas and sub-tropical regions. There are also quite a few very interesting archaeological complexes, such as: Tiahuanaco, which is a wonderful site that has been recently excavated. There are new discoveries being made there almost daily. The Valley of the Moon, a place where erosion has caused stony forms that give the sensation of being on the moon, is also an interesting hike. |
