The Jesuits arrived to this land with the purpose of completing their dream of building the “City of God” on Earth and to evangelize the native residents of that area.
Traveling to Jesuits Missions is like going back to the time of the missions at the end of the XVII century, a secret world which remained isolated for two centuries. Aside from their skills in living off the land, the natives of that area also were skilled craftsmen. They proved their great dexterity with their hands and exercised a great capacity for learning, proof of which can be seen in paintings, sculptures, music and dances that the natives learned to praise God, manifestations that expressed great religious and cultural syncretism.
Hans Roth worked to preserve the beauty of the religious architecture at these missions, and with a group of experts, intervened to restore these amazing constructions and bring back to their original status,.
The extremely high level of artistry and the deep cultural sense of the works achieved at the Jesuit Missions motivated UNESCO to declare them in 1991 as part of the “Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity”. |
