ECUADOR DESTINATIONS
THE ECUADORIAN AMAZON |
In the eastern part of the country, commonly known as the Amazon Basin, there is almost constant heavy rainfall and high humidity. The vegetation of the Ecuadorian Amazon is exuberant as is its fauna. Quite a few different bird species, many of which are in danger of extinction, and a great variety of mammals, reptiles, and fish all make their home there. Within and around the huge protected areas of the Amazon Rain Forest several indigenous groups live side by side, each maintaining its distinct customs and traditions. These indigenous peoples live in houses made from native materials and are sought after as jungles guides today. Responsible tourism generates revenues which allow the tribes to maintain their communities and protect the rainforest from encroachment.

Some of the Amazon’s most impressive and expansive ecological reserves can also be found in this part of Ecuador, including Cuyabano. The Cuyabeno Reserve was created in 1979 and has a huge area of 6 000 km sq of untainted rainforest situated around the Río Cuyabeno. Because of the steep drop-off from the Andes Mountains in the sierra region, this area is incredibly bio-diverse. It is a very beautiful region, and has become popular for its lakes, swamps and amazing diversity of animals including: butterflies, river dolphins, tapirs, crocodiles, capybaras and anacondas. There are also over 500 species of birds, including the hoatzin, and 15 species of monkey.
