ECUADOR DESTINATIONS
THE OTAVALO MARKET |
Otavalo is a small city that lies about 2 hours outside of Quito. It is inhabited by the descendants of Los Shyris; a civilization which appeared on the coast of Ecuador over 1,500 years ago and spread from the coast into the highlands. The surrounding countryside is rich in archaeological sites that include mounds, pyramids and temples. During most of the week it is a quiet and peaceful place, but on market days ppeople flood the streets, and the atmosphere resembles a circus. The Otavalo Market is one of South America’s most famous Indian markets.

Otavalo Weavings
|
It dates back to pre-Inca times; villagers from surrounding areas have been bringing their wares down from the hills to the Otavalo market for hundreds of years, to spend a day filled with bartering, exchanging, selling, and socializing. The market is a kaleidoscope of colors and is a great place to take pictures of or buy: tapestries with geometric designs, woven ponchos, brightly colored alpaca scarves, and hand-knit sweaters, as well as woodcarvings and paintings by local artists. Otavalo is especially famous for its textiles woven on back-strap and shuttle looms. One can visit the workshops of the hard-working weavers, along with other artisans at work making hats, weaving straw mats, and knitting sweaters.
