In response to interest expressed by our clients, Kuoda recently initiated a homestay project in the village of Chinchero, about 45 minutes south of Cusco, Peru. The idea behind a home stay is to give travelers a glimpse into a lifestyle that is different from their own. The family who are hosting the homestay are not travel professionals and are not creating a display for clients. Rather they are providing an opportunity for clients to experience genuine Peruvian warmth and hospitality, while participating in the daily activities of the family and gaining an understanding of another world view. In exchange, as in the concept of Ayni,* the family is helped economically and also has the opportunity to learn something about the culture of their guests. Accommodations are clean but rustic, homey and down-to-earth.
