Peru's Unique Wonders

Peru`s Unique Wonders (11d/10n) - Detailed

Welcome to Peru: Lima
When your international flight arrives in Lima you will be met and assisted by our English-speaking representative. From there our representative will accompany you to your hotel.
The city of Lima was founded by Francisco Pizarro during his conquest of South America in 1535. It was the main vice-royalty of western South America, and the focal point for Spanish control and domination of the region through the middle of the eighteenth century. Its highly stylized architecture, which can be seen in its churches, museums and government buildings, bears witness to its colonial past. This coastal metropolis was once considered to be among the principal cities of the world.
It is known today for its wonderful cuisine, including many varieties of ceviche, a typical Peruvian dish made with raw fish marinated in lime and accompanied by onions, cilantro, and hot peppers.
Overnight: Hotel in Lima.

Journeying to Tambopata: Lima – Tambopata (B, L, D)
In the morning you will be taken to the Lima airport to board your flight Lima – Puerto Maldonado. From there you will be assisted as you transfer, by boat, to the Reserva Amazonica in Tambopata. Tambopata is located between the regions of Puno and Madre de Dios and was established in 1990 to protect the flora and fauna contained therein. After a brief rest, take a guided walk along one of the many beautiful trails where you will get to see many different examples of bird and insect life. This is a wonderful introduction to the Amazon Rainforest. As the sun starts to set, take a boat ride along the Madre de Dios River and observe how the environment changes as twilight gives way to darkness. You may have the opportunity to see such animals as: nightjars (a species of bird), owls, capybaras, and caimans.
Overnight: Reserva Amazonica

The Colors of Tambopata: Tambopata (B, L, D)
In the morning take a five-minute boat ride to the Canopy Inkaterra Interpretation Center. You may ascend the first tower, which is 30 meters above the forest floor.  The center consists of eight observation platforms linked by suspension bridges. Spend some time walking on the bridges that stretch between the different platforms. You can observe the jungle from on high, and see various bird species flying in the canopy or landing nearby. Some of the animals you may observe include woodpeckers, toucans, monkeys and sloths. After lunch, you can enjoy a visit to the Sandoval Lake. This palm-rimmed lake is the most beautiful and wildlife-rich of all the lakes in Tambopata. It is the home of many species, including giant river otters, hoatzins, (prehistoric-looking birds), kingfishers, and herons. The lake is also good place to cool off with a refreshing swim.
Overnight: Reserva Amazonica

In Search of Caimans: Tambopata (B, L, D)
Today you’ll visit the Gamitana Farm a farm in the Amazon jungle located near Gamitana Creek, which winds its way throughout this region. The creek is home to piranhas, caimans, turtles, and many different species of birds.
Piranhas are a species of fish that is native to the Amazon. Their reputation for viciousness is largely exaggerated, although they do sometimes bite humans. They are used as a food fish and their teeth are used in the making of tools and weapons. Caimans are a species of alligator that can grow up to six feet in length. They are eaten by the local population and revered in stories and myths by the local tribal peoples.
With a bit of luck, you will be able to spot these and other species on your visit to the Gamitana Creek area. Overnight: Reserva Amazonica

Exploring Tambopata: Tambopata (B, L, D)
In the morning visit La Concepción, in which there is a botanical garden with more than 200 different species of plants. In the afternoon you’ll visit the Rolin Island and Community. Here you’ll learn about the Island eco-system as you explore it. You’ll also see a presentation at the Primate Rescue Center, which is home to three species of primates—the brown capuchin, white capuchin, and squirrel monkeys.
Overnight: Reserva Amazonica Luxury Lodge, a private ecological reserve and research center on 10,000 hectares (24 710 acres) with more than 27 years promoting sustainable use of the Amazon Rainforest. The lodge has private cabins, with lovely views of the Madre de Dios River and the surrounding rainforest. Local materials were used to build them in the traditional architectural style of the native Machiguenga and Ese-Eja peoples. The cabins are on raised platforms, and have pitched roofs and large windows for optimal ventilation. There are also several other lodge choices, like the Posada Amazonas and Refugio Amazonas, both with activities for families.

Leaving the Tambopata Paradise: Tambopata / Cusco – Sacred Valley (B)
In the morning, you’ll transfer to Puerto Maldonado and then visit the City’s Butterfly Farm, which contains more than 3,800 varieties of butterflies and moths, making it unique in Peru.
Afterwards you’ll be taken to the airport to board your direct flight Pto. Maldonado – Cusco. From there your private car will take you to the Sacred Valley of Inkas, which is at a lower altitude, which makes it easier for your body to acclimatize. You will be welcomed at your hotel with a cup of “Mate de Coca,” coca leaf tea.
The Sacred Valley of the Inkas is located in the Peruvian Andes, near Cusco. It is fed by many rivers that descend from adjoining valleys and canyons. It is an area of great natural wealth, ideally suited for the production of maize. It includes everything between the villages of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, and runs alongside the Urubamba River. It is replete with ruins and ancient agricultural terraces, some still in use today. Overnight: Hotel in the Sacred Valley

Discovering the Sacred Valley: The Sacred Valley (B, L)
In the morning, you will visit the wonderful Pisac Ruins and Market, where you can taste the freshly baked bread this region is known for. The ruins are divided into four zones: Pisaqa, Intihuatana, Q’allaqasa, and Kinchiracay.  The sun temple is located in the Intihuatana Zone and it contains a “hitching post” to tie up the sun on its journey. It is believed to have served an astronomical purpose. The Pisac Market has quite a variety of unique handicrafts, including ceramics, silver, costume jewelry, embroidery, tapestries, and textile arts.
Lunch at 3 Keros or Huacatay (Gourmet Restaurant)
After lunch, visit the fortress of Ollantaytambo, which is a Sacred Valley village that preserves the urban designs of the Inka. Climb up to the Temple of the Sun, pausing to view and discuss its agricultural terraces. You will also observe some Qolcas, which were used to store food, clothing and other articles of daily life. Afterwards, descend to the Inka and the Ñusta baths.
Overnight: Hotel in Sacred Valley

The Sacred City of the Inkas: The Sacred Valley – Machupicchu (B, L)
In the morning you will be taken to the Ollantaytambo train station for a 1.5 hour journey to Machupicchu. Your guided tour of “the Lost City of the Inkas” will include a lecture about the natural limestone rock formations, which were adapted and incorporated into the construction of the citadel and the highly stylized temples contained therein. Re-discovered by Hiram Bingham and brought to the attention of the western world in 1911, Machupicchu was covered in jungle foliage and hidden in the cloud forest of the Andes. After its re-discovery, it was uncovered, cleared and renovated by archaeologists. It is an amazing feat of architecture considering the difficulties of the region it’s situated in. It is a site considered by many to possess a special mystical energy, which you may experience yourself during your visit.
After a savory lunch in the Machupicchu Sanctuary Lodge Restaurant it is time to return to your hotel.
Free afternoon in Machupicchu
Overnight: Hotel in Machupicchu

A Day in Aguas Calientes: Machupicchu – the Sacred Valley (B)

On the way you can observe different species of trees, plants, ferns, insects, reptiles, birds and mammals. Or you can hike up the mountains of Inti Punku or Huaynapicchu, and observe more of the ancient Inka citadel and its complex architecture. Huaynapicchu is the peak seen behind the ruins in the famous panoramic photos of Machupicchu. Its name means “young peak” in Quechua, while “Machupicchu” means “old peak.”
In the afternoon you will board the train to return to Cusco, (3.5 hours) where you will be met by our representative in the station of Poroy, located 20 minutes from the city. You’ll arrive an hour earlier than the usual train stop at Cusco station, and then be transferred to the hotel.

Exploring the Navel of the World: Cusco (B)
In the morning you will take a private tour of the city of Cusco and its nearby ruins. You’ll head out to Sacsayhuaman (meaning satisfied falcon), which is the head of what the Inkas thought of as the puma-shaped city of Cuzco. This ancient fortress contains Inka stone walls, with stone seats used for observation and steps leading throughout its different sections. Afterwards you’ll visit Qenqo, where you can see the Inka altar that was once used for animal sacrifices.
Afterwards, you’ll visit: the Cathedral of Cusco, with its massive stone pillars and elaborate religious works of art, and Koricancha, or the Temple of the Sun, which was the main religious center of the Inkas dedicated to the Sun cult. It has some of the best Inka stonework in the city.
