When your international flight arrives in Lima you will be met and assisted by our English-speaking representative. From there our representative will accompany you to your hotel.
The city of Lima was founded by Francisco Pizarro during his conquest of South America in 1535. It was the main vice-royalty of western South America, and the focal point for Spanish control and domination of the region through the middle of the eighteenth century. Its highly stylized architecture, which can be seen in its churches, museums and government buildings, bears witness to its colonial past. This coastal metropolis was once considered to be among the principal cities of the world.
It is known today for its wonderful cuisine, including many varieties of ceviche, a typical Peruvian dish made with raw fish marinated in lime and accompanied by onions, cilantro, and hot peppers.

A Taste of the Sacred Valley:
Lima – Cusco – the Sacred Valley (B)
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your direct flight to Cusco. From Cusco, your private car will take you to the Sacred Valley of the Inkas, which, at a lower altitude, helps your body acclimatize. You will be welcomed to your hotel with a cup of “Mate de Coca,” coca leaf tea.
At more than 3000 meters in altitude, Cusco, the “Navel of the World,” was the ancient capital of the Inkas until Pizarro gained control of it in the mid-sixteenth century. Many of its Inka walls, with precisely fitted stonework that has never been reproduced, are still standing side by side with Spanish colonial style churches and other edifices.
The Sacred Valley of the Inkas is located nearby. It is fed by many rivers that descend from adjoining valleys and canyons and is an area of great natural wealth, ideally suited for the production of maize. It stretches alongside the Urubamba River, and is replete with ancient ruins and agricultural terraces, some still in use today.

The Sacred City of the Inkas (B, L)
In the morning, you will visit the wonderful Pisac Ruins and Market, where you can taste the freshly baked bread this region is known for. The ruins are reached after an ascending hike of approximately two hours. They are divided into four zones: Pisaqa, Intihuatana, Q’allaqasa, and Kinchiracay. The sun temple is located in the Intihuatana Zone and it contains a “hitching post” to tie up the sun on its journey. It is believed to have served an astronomical purpose for the Inka priests. There are also Inka crosses, representing the three levels of existence, planted in the earth here. The Pisac Market has quite a variety of unique handicrafts. One can find ceramics, silver, costume jewelry, embroidery, tapestries, and textile arts. It is a great chance to admire and/or purchase craft items directly from the hands that created them.

An Umasbamba Experience: Sacred Valley – Machupicchu (B, L)
You’ll spend half a day in an authentic village in the Sacred Valley, whose inhabitants are practicing their traditional lifestyle, including the ancient art of weaving, farming and raising of livestock, and rituals and customs of old. Umasbamba is a traditional community of Chinchero that dates back to Inka times. It is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, mountains and the Apus (mountain spirits) of beautiful Lake Piuray. The weaving techniques practiced here are some of the oldest in the Americas, and date from the time of the Inka. The more than fifty designs used here are unique to this region and are implemented using the same tools and materials as their ancestors.
Your half day tour may include participation in agriculture and/or assisting with animals, collecting plants and preparing dyes, a hands-on weaving demonstration, and participation in local customs. In the afternoon, you will be taken to the Ollantaytambo train station for a 1.5 hour journey to Machupicchu.
