Fishing

Peru has 2 800 km of Pacific Ocean coastal waters. The Humboldt current’s cold waters affect three-fourths of the coast, and warm tropical currents affect the other fourth. Two of the fish species that can be fished in the colder waters are Black Marlin and Yellow Fin Tuna; while it is possible to catch Sea Bass, Snook and Grouper in the warmer areas, especially inland in the mangrove swamps. In the Amazon, the paiche, the largest freshwater fish in this river, makes for spectacular fishing.

Celebrities like Bob Hope, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Prince Philip of Edinburgh, Nelson Rockefeller, and the bullfighter, Dominguin, have fished Peru’s waters. The great writer, Ernest Hemingway, wrote his famous work “The Old Man and the Sea”, inspired by the large fish found in the oceans of Peru.

Argentina is  a large and beautiful country that offers world class fly-fishing. Here,  Brown trout, rainbow trout, landlocked salmon and Eastern brook trout thrive. These trout came from New York stock and were introduced in the early twentieth century.

In Los Alerces National Park, in Argentina, one can find more than twenty four lakes and rivers, where the fly-fishing is superb; these lakes and rivers are remote and difficult to access, so they present a special thrill to fishermen.  The gorgeous natural surroundings further enhance the fishing experience.

Chile: As one of the world’s most geographically diverse countries, Chile has much to offer the fisherman. Some of its best fishing regions include Patagonia, the Lakes district, and rivers of the fjords. Some of the species that can be successfully fished in Chile  include Wild Atlantic salmon, Pacific or silver salmon, brown and rainbow trout.
Chile´s crystal streams and remote rivers present good opportunities to access previously unfished areas. Trout were introduced to Chile in the year 1905 and began to thrive, especially in the Lakes region. Starting around the 1930’s sports fishermen began to make their way to Chile; it has since become known as a choice country for trout fishermen.

Brazil:  In the Brazilian Amazon, one of the prime sports is fishing for the ferocious Peacock Bass, considered one of the strongest and most active freshwater fish in the world. The largest Peacock Bass live in the warm tropical waters of Northern Brazil, on the Rio Negro. Some of these fish weigh more than 20 pounds and are large and powerful. They put up an amazing struggle when caught. The world record for this fish is 27 pounds, and it was caught in Brazil in 1994. Peacock Bass fishing is considered a unique thrill for sports fishermen, and they make good eating as well. The dry season, roughly November through March, is the best time for Peacock Bass fishing on the Amazon.
